  1. Not a fair shake given to the raw diet. You practically doomed it to failure by raising that “hard to balance” myth.

As a raw feeder since 2006, to more than 3 dozen converted kibble cruncher ferrets, feeding a well balanced raw diet is NOT difficult at all.

Keep in mind please, that to date there are zero actual studies done to PROVE the nutrient requirements of ferrets. That kibble for ferrets is based upon a ranch mink diet. That kibble is designed for human convenience, shelf stability and is NOT able to offer proper nutrient balance in forms that ferrets evolved to thrive upon!

The percentages of protein and fats in any kibble will never be adequate and kibble forces indigestible carbs into your ferret’s system which causes major health issues. Kibble does not promote optimal oral health and causes systemic health problems.

Ferrets are designed to utilize solely animal protein, bones and fats; ferrets have no need for, nor can they digest any plants, grains, carbs, herbs, veggies etc.

A so called quality kibble or processed ferret food can cost 4 to 6 dollars a pound! And most of that costly food is harming your ferret and then getting pooped out!

A raw diet can be fed from items costing 1 to 3 dollars a pound and will offer 98 to 100% digestibility!

Balancing a raw diet is quite easy: Approach the feeding as if they are being offered the equivalent of an entire prey animal. Meat, skin, fat, edible bone, liver, heart, sweetbreads, bulls balls are offered daily to my guys, they eat free choice. Their systems tell them what they need.

I use multiple protein sources: chicken, turkey, Cornish hen, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, goat, beef, lamb, pork, salmon, sardines, night crawlers, super worms, butter worms. Fats from unsalted butter, unsalted lard, unseasoned meat drippings, bone marrow, chicken skin, fish oil. Raw eggs are offered once or twice weekly. Heavy whipping cream is a treat on Sundays. Edible bone supplies supreme nutrients and comes from chicken necks, wings, and backs, turkey wing tips, pork neck bones, rabbit bones, lamb bones, goat bones, sardine bones and pulverized, toasted egg shells.

Watching their deposit consistency helps me gauge if they are getting enough bone. Too gooey means more bone or egg shell, too dry means less.

Proper diets get balanced over time, not in every mouthful. A kibble diet can NEVER be properly balanced when kibble is made mostly from plants but your ferret is an obligate carnivore.

Save yourself a ton of money, watch your ferret truly thrive and become vibrant and switch them to a raw diet!

  2. running a rescue, I found it very hard when 2 raw diets were turned in. I wanted to keep them on the raw diet and was successful in adopting out one but the other, I hate to say, I did switch to the kibble BECAUSE I felt it more important to get that ferret into a forever home on kibble than have her live her life at the shelter on a raw diet. She didn’t get to socialize with the others because I didn’t want her eating kibble and kibble is out in their playpens, she didn’t get out as often as I have only 8 playpens to put 30 to 50 ferrets out – where I can mix the different cages, she would have to be alone in hers……..I found it very expensive, feeding ground turkey, rabbit $10 a lb, and $9 a lb for some of the other meats like duck…….I had to order 10 lbs of chicken hearts at a time, and well trying to mix the organ meats with the other and having run this as a shelter, it was too hard but it might be well for those with just pets. I had at one time had 4 of my own I taught them to eat pinkies and chicks and wow they were in good health weight coat and their poop DID NOT STINK. But they got to hiding parts and pieces and that was a game of its own. I just couldn’t win.
